Playground Shenanigans

Mini can do more than swing now. She has learned to slide, teeter totter, and climb structures, making playgrounds so much more fun and tiring. She also tried the sandbox today - didn't hate it, didn't love it.

Over the weekend, Mini also mastered stairs at Cousin E's house. She can crawl up using hands and knees, then back down butt-first. But hey, why crawl up and down? Her preference is to walk up and down stairs like a grown-up. This is an accident waiting to happen.

Goldfish to the Rescue

Mini isn't the most stable walker yet and falls a lot. Today was the worst yet where she tripped and scraped her face against the mattress box. It didn't seem that bad until she started crying and then we saw her bloody mouth. Yikes! The bleeding went for a couple minutes and we tried to check out the wound which only made her cry louder. So what was the solution to stop the crying? Feed her goldfish crackers! Mini loves this snack and stopped crying when she saw the goldfish bag. Kinda gross to think of it but she managed to eat while bleeding - not such an appetizing combination (blood and cheese crackers). This may also be how she swallowed her own gum (yes! you read correctly). The next day, we realized that she was missing the gum flesh above her left, front tooth. It didn't seem to phase her since she ate, drank, and played like nothing happened.

Dear Readers

Apologies for the hiatus. Things have been busy and the posts have suffered. But after a couple of late nights and trying to remember details and match photos, the blog is up to date.

You'll want to go back as far as May 4's New York, New York to catch up on Mini's adventures.

I'll try not to let this happen again :)

Sleep Training

Not much progress here yet. It was looking good in May but then we hit regression with catching the cold, teething, and Mama's laziness. The crib was moved to the parent's bedroom about two weeks ago and Mini still thinks of it as a playpen and won't sleep there. She needs to fall sleep on the big bed and be transferred to the crib, which is challenging because the move wakes her up and it takes another ten minutes to achieve deep sleep. Even when Mama thinks it's safe enough to put her down, she feels the lowering motion and wakes up (crying and kicking ensues). Argghhh.

When we're lucky enough to get her in the crib via method above, she consistently wakes up around 3am and starts screeching when she realizes she's alone. Here's where Mama is too tired to get Mini back to sleep in the crib and carries her into the big bed where she goes right to sleep until 8am.

Small success yesterday though - Mini was in the crib and lied down when she was asked to. She at least pretended to sleep.

Bedtime is anywhere from 8:30 to 10pm. Here's the routine - wash hands, change diaper, drink milk, put on PJs, brush teeth, find Monkey, lie down, rub Mama's ears till they hurt, fall asleep.

Nap times are consistent around 11am to 1pm and again from 5pm to 7pm. These are being moved to Mini's room instead of the big bed. It's too easy for Mini to wake up, crawl around drowsy, and fall off. Even though Mini gives us warning calls before she starts moving and seems to know that falling will hurt, you can't be too sure.

Acro Sports

We went to toddler drop-in at Acro Sports today and had 30 minutes of new experiences - trampoline, tunnels, tumble mats, and more. Mini was hesitant about most of these and didn't seem to enjoy anything. She preferred to walk around and poke at things, make new friends, and chase a ball.

Not my regular swing, not as much fun

New friend - Mini was totally at a disadvantage since she was stuck in the circle

Tooth #7

Bottom, right. You can see it coming. Poor girl has three teeth coming in at the same time. #8 will probably show up soon too.

Tooth #5 and #6

More teeth coming in.

Developments: Mini starting nodding yes. She really has a taste for sour (likes to suck on lemon and lime wedges) and spicy (eats small bits of kimchee). Mini's still not drinking correctly as she tends to choke and gag after gulps from the straw or cup. Not sure if it's a problem with air intake or she's swallowing down the wrong pipe.

Pool Party

Happy birthday to Cousin C! We got an invite to sunny San Ramon to celebrate Cousin C's second birthday. They had an inflatable kiddie pool set up but Mini didn't like it. Papa dunked her in and that resulted in crying and panic.

Mini preferred to play with a tricycle and she even learned to drive this automatic ATV and scooted around for a couple circles. Isn't this brave for a one-year old when the toy is meant for three plus? I like to think so since it involved pushing a button to move, anticipating the movement, and not falling off. If it isn't brave, it's pretty cute.

After cake and more birthday fun, she spent the afternoon chasing after the big kids and trying to fit in.

Baby Formula, All Done

Mini is officially done drinking formula and solely on cow's milk. We are also down to two bottles a day (previously four). There may be a little constipation with this switch but it passes. Mini's poo face...

She has learned to shake hands and today's new obsession is playing with doors - closing and opening them. She jammed her fingers a couple times and then learned to remove them before the door closes. It didn't take too long for her to figure it out.

Welcome Home

I've always heard that one of the most satisfying things about being a father is coming home and having kids who are excited to see you. I have to say that this is very true. Today, I came home and Mini walked up to me and gave my leg a hug. I guess it's a start. This was the first time since she really started walking that she walked over on her own accord. In the past couple of weeks, she had been welcoming me home with loud screams. It's interesting, though, because by bedtime, she doesn't want anything to do with daddy.

SF Zoo

Gotta love the free days. This Wednesday we went to the SF Zoo and saw a couple of animals that Mini would recognize (giraffe, penguin, lion, monkeys, etc.).

We think she recognized the real deal penguins.

Ducky, come back. You didn't say quack to me.

One-Year Wellness Check

This was a different experience now that Mini is walking as she was hard to contain and impossible to keep on the exam table. To distract her, we gave her cotton balls, water cups, popsicle sticks, and whatever else the doctor had available.

Everything checked out perfectly and Mini got a clean bill of health. She even played with Dr. R by putting a popsicle stick in his mouth to make him say ahhhh. Then Mini made him laugh when she started mimicking his head shake as he was talking about the negatives of drinking too much milk.

She got three shots and cried like they really hurt. This time she cried for an extended period of time and was harder to console.

Dr said her measurements were in the 25th percentile for all.

Head circumference 44.5 cm

Length 28.5 in

Weight 19 lbs 3oz
